City of Nogales Press Release

The City of Nogales is aware of yesterday’s US Customs and Border Patrol Press Release, which details three Nogales Port of Entry employees reportedly testing positive for COVID-19. Due to protections in place to safeguard personal information, it is not possible to know whether the three CBP employees are included in the 5 cases in Santa Cruz County. Test results are reported to the individual’s residence, and not all CBP employees have a residence in Santa Cruz County. Some may even have residences outside the State of Arizona and may be assigned to the Nogales Port of Entry on Temporary Duty Travel (TDY). The number of positive cases in Santa Cruz County may not reflect the true number of those with the virus in the county. This is especially true when considering the fact that individuals may be asymptomatic, while infected with COVID-19. That is why social distancing, hand washing, and wearing a cloth mask while in public are important steps to flatten the curve.

Nogales Mayor Garino put out an important message highlighting the need for social distancing. He advises that if residents have to go out to buy essentials, they should keep at least 6 feet of distance from the next person. The Mayor recommends washing hands after touching an object. Further, the Mayor stated that if residents do go to the store, they should try to go by themselves. The full video is available in both Spanish and English at covid19.nogalesaz.gov.

The City of Nogales, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office developed a brochure to inform local, essential business owners of the Banners for Businesses initiative. If you’re a local, essential, business that can benefit from a complimentary banner that lets the community know you’re OPEN, then let the City of Nogales help you! The City will be distributing brochures to local businesses. Local business owners interested in a complimentary banner can call the City at 520-287-6571 or visit covid19.nogalesaz.gov and look under the Business Resources section. A number of local business owners have already requested complimentary banners. Banners will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis for a limited time.
