Woman Passes Away Next to the Hospital IMSS

The Border Reports

NOGALES – A woman passed away today right in front of IMSS hospital located downtown Nogales.  Relatives and witnesses reported that when the woman lost consciousness they ran to the hospital to request help, but hospital staff did not want to help and the woman passed away moments later.

The deceased was a 36-year-old woman, whose identity has not been officially revealed or the cause of death, but a heart attack is assumed.

The incident occurred around 9:40 am when the woman and her husband were eating at a taco stand on Mariano Escobedo Street, in front of the emergency area of the IMSS Family Medical Unit 5.

Witnesses reported that the woman fell out of her chair and her husband started CPR, while a taxi driver and another woman went to the hospital to request help.

“No one opened the door, we knocked and a nurse said they could not leave their station”, said the woman that went to the hospital to request assistance.

The taxi driver pointed out that he went twice to the emergency area and that the staff declined to go assist; instead they lent him a wheelchair.

IMSS Hospital version of events

Aline Rodríguez, director of the IMSS medical unit, stated that she reviewed the camera footage and the woman’s case was never reported as an emergency to the staff, but instead as someone that had fallen and had scratches.

“A wheelchair was requested at the entrance of the ambulances by emergency care, right after an older woman with blond hair approached the medical assistant saying that there was a lady who had fallen and had scratches.  She did not provide any other information, and the information did not seem alarming”, she said.

“Therefore we requested that if she was taking a wheelchair, they should bring her in to receive medical assistance, we were never alerted of the seriousness of the case or that this person had lost consciousness”, said the doctor in charge of the medical unit.

She added that after being informed that it was a more serious case, a doctor did go to the location of the incident to provide assistance.  But the original request for help was that a person had fallen from a chair where she was eating and that she had scratches, which is why they requested the wheelchair.  “It is not uncommon for us to receive requests for wheelchairs” the doctor added.
