US Travel Advisory for Caborca, Sonora
CABORCA, SONORA, MX – Sonora is a key location for international drug trafficking and human trafficking networks, the United States Department of State cites in its travel advisory and urges travelers to consider this in their travel plans due to the latest crime wave.
In the northern part of the state, violence has increased in recent months in the polygon located between Caborca, Altar, and Sonoyta.
Caborca is not specifically listed in the US diplomatic travel alerts on its “Travel Alert” site, but, it is mentioned on the US Embassy website as of June 22, after receiving reports of violence from the cartels.
“The Consulate General of the United States has received reports of cartel violence in the municipality of Caborca and surrounding areas, including heavily armed groups patrolling the area, with attacks between the sides of the cartels,” cites the security advisory at the time.

“The American consulate staff is prohibited from traveling on Federal Highway 2 from Santa Ana to Sonoyta until further notice”, it adds.
Other recommendations are to avoid traveling at dusk, monitoring local news, following directions from authorities, and awareness of the whereabouts of family and friends.
