US Citizen Caught Smuggling Almost 14,000 Packs of Cigarettes Into Mexico

NOGALES, SONORA, MEXICO – A male US citizen was detained in Nogales in possession of almost 14,000 packs of illegal cigarettes.

“They were alerted that a person was found to be transporting cigarette boxes of different brands in the trunk of his vehicle, for which he did not have the necessary documents to prove their legal origin,” said the National Guard.

According to the joint statement by the National Guard and the Tax Administration Service (SAT), cigarettes are included on the health emergency list issued by Cofepris, as they contain potentially toxic chemical compounds.

The person and the seized material were placed at the disposal of the Federal Public Ministry for the respective inquiries and legal consequences.
