Southbound Nogales Port of Entry Closed 2 Hours Today by Protesters
NOGALES, SONORA, MEXICO – Border crossing from the USA to Mexico through the Dennis DeConcini Port of entry remained closed for about two hours during Wednesday morning due to a protest on the Mexican side of the border.
A group of people blocked the entrance to Mexico in Garita Puerta de Mexico (Dennis DeConcini) protesting the electric power service shut-offs by the electric company to people who have not paid for the service.
Jose Luis Hernandez, a representative of the movement, criticized the electric power shut-offs during this contingency period of Covid-19 since cutting the service leaves many families unprotected.
He also criticized what he considers very high rates for electricity power service.
The block started around 9:00 a.m. and lasted until approximately 11:00 a.m.
The Nogales Police Department advised travelers to use the Mariposa International Border Crossing instead to enter Mexico.
Protesters met with Juan Gim, administrator of the Nogales Port, to whom they exposed the problem and provided a document to be delivered before the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). The document is a formal request addressed to the electric power service in Mexico to stop shutting off electrical service.
Around 11:30 a.m. cars finally began to pass through this international port of entry.
