Sahuaro Cacti Vandalized in Arizona

TUCSON, ARIZONA, USA – Arizona authorities are looking for those responsible for wiping out at least eight sahuaro cacti, some with an approximate age of 100 years.

Guards from the Western District of Saguaro National Park are asking for any information you might have regarding the vandalism.

They are slow-growing plants, they had a height of between 30 centimeters and three meters and it is believed that the plants were vandalized on October 3.

“All plants, animals, and resources in the national park are protected,” said Superintendent Leah McGinnis. “The damage to the saguaro cacti is especially disheartening because they are the reason for the park’s establishment.”

They have solicited information from the public about anyone who has seen anything on a visit made on the Scenic Trail, Passey Loop Trails, or the Scenic Drive Trailhead around October 3.

“A 10-foot cactus could easily be 100 years old and was killed in a senseless act of vandalism,” McGinnis lamented.

The complaint number in the United States is 888-653-0009, or you can email nps_isb@nps.gov.
