Residents in Some Areas of North Tucson Are Being Evacuated
TUCSON, ARIZONA, USA – Pima County emergency authorities are evacuating residents of some areas at North Tucson in the face of a strong fire caused by a lightning strike.
Today at 9:15 a.m. residents were asked to evacuate from zones of the Pima Canyon area as well as the Catalina Foothills area.
They also asked residents of the Catalina Foothills area, between Alvernon Way and Sabino Canyon Rd., North of Skyline Dr., to be prepare.
“There is a significant danger,” the emergency service authority warned.
The fire was caused by lightning and it has been burning in the extreme west of the Santa Catalina Mountains since June 5. Since then, the fire has moved east and south closer to the populated areas of the Catalina Foothills area.
The Pima County Office of Emergency Management, in coordination with the United States Forest Service and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, has sent emergency messages to residents in the affected areas.
These messages include an evacuation order for residents closest to the fire.
Starting June 11, fire crews will perform burns along the southern end of the fire from Pima Canyon east to Finger Rock and Pontatoc.
Burns are made to consume fuel between firefighters and forest fires
The purpose of this action is to burn the fuel within the path of the fire and to significantly stop or lessen the fire, allowing crews to access to build the line of fire
