Ramp Construction Begins

NOGALES, ARIZONA, USA – Beginning next week and for one and a half years, construction of two elevated ramps between the Mariposa Road and I-19 will start.

The government will invest 134 million in this construction where the objective is to improve security and give more fluidity to the transit of passengers and goods, thereby improving the cross-border economy.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) project, construction work will take place on State Route 189 (Mariposa Road) in Nogales, a 3.75-mile highway connecting the international border with Interstate Highway 19.

The first of the two ramps connecting both North and South on Interstate 19 will connect from Mariposa Road. A roundabout is also contemplated on the Mariposa Road and Target Range Road.

Overpass ramps that connect to both directions of I-19 will eliminate the need for commercial trucks to stop for up to three stoplights before beginning their trips north.

Construction is slated to begin next week and will take around 18 months.

The work is funded in part by a $25 million investment by the Arizona Legislature and a $25 million federal TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) grant.
