In a meeting with the Major of Nogales, Jesus Pujol Irastorza, the Technical Administrator of Nogales Industrial Park, Arturo Medrano Leal, as well as Cecilia Yepiz Reyna, Secretary of Urban Development and Ecology, presented some strategies to the company’s executives.
Pujol Irastorza said that as a result of the meeting, Continental’s company executives committed to present the strategies to Continental’s headquarter executives.
They will also continue with follow up meetings with the aim of retaining the operation of this company in Nogales, Sonora, which represents jobs for more than 2,000 people.
In a press release, the City Mayor explains that Continental’s decision to gradually close the facility in Nogales, is due to factors related to the international market conditions of the automotive industry, in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Continental is one of the most important companies we have in Nogales, that is why we are very interested in finding ways to retain them, to keep them in the city, for what it represents for the development of the city, but above all for what it represents for the families of the workers who work there,” the City Mayor said.
After the meeting, the directors of the company expressed that they were completely satisfied with the quality of labor offered by the Nogales workers, as well as with the general conditions offered by Nogales to operate in this border area
“It is very important to point out that Continental’s decision to announce the gradual closure of its maquiladora is due to market conditions that are beyond our reach, and not to Nogales’ own conditions,” declared the mayor.
The next meeting will be held in September.
