News Media Website Director Assassinated

CIUDAD OBREGON, SONORA, MX – The Director of a news media website in Obregon, Sonora in Mexico, was killed in a shooting on Saturday while two police officers were injured.

The Sonora Attorney General’s Office confirmed the attack on Twitter and that Jorge Armenta Avalos, director of Medios Obson, was killed.

One of the police officers was fatally wounded, passing away shortly afterward in a hospital.

The Sonora State Governor, Claudia Pavlovich, posted on Twitter that she asked the state attorney general, Claudia Indira Contreras, to travel to Ciudad Obregon to immediately start investigations and clarify the case.

The assault occurred Saturday, at 3:00 pm when in the emergency phone line 911 received a report of a shooting on Chihuahua and Allende streets in Ciudad Obregon.

The bodyguards were identified as Rafael V and Orlando R,  the latter died moments later in the General Hospital. They had been assigned as bodyguards of the victim since he had previously received death threats.

So far authorities have not released any further information on this crime.
