Immigrant Deportation Continues Amidst Covid-19 Pandemic

NOGALES, SONORA, MX – Deportations of immigrants to Mexico by US authorities have not stopped despite the high risks of contagion due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to information from the National Institute of Migration (INM), between 40 and 70 people are returned daily to Mexico from U.S. immigration authorities through the Nogales Port.

Mexican immigration agents are constantly at risk. This week two immigration agents in Nogales suffered health problems with symptoms similar to Covid-19. At the time of this publication, there is not confirmation that they are infected with the virus.

Between October 2019 and June 2020, CBP reported arrests and detection of inadmissible people in the United States for a total of 308,541.

Of these, 259,147 were detained by the Border Patrol and 49,394 were encounters with inadmissible people at CBP field offices.
