Essential Travel Restriction to Mexico Remains, Though Intermittent

NOGALES, SONORA, MX – While in cities like Agua Prieta and Naco, Sonora, Mexican authorities have removed non-essential checkpoints for travelers coming from the US into Mexico, in Nogales the checkpoints are still in operation.

Juan Gim, Nogales’ Customs Port Director, confirmed that on Tuesday the checkpoint was in operation.

He said that the mandate indicates that checkpoints do not need to be open 24/7. Instead, they operate intermittently based on the availability of the National Migration Institute.

“By now the checkpoints will continue to operate indefinitely until new instructions are received’’, he added.

“They (central Custom authorities) might tell us to put the checkpoints on the weekend. We do not know what will happen, but for now, they continue working”, he continued.

Officially, the checkpoint by Customs and INM began last Saturday as part of the joint initiative between the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The intention is to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Non-essential travel restrictions to cross the border from Mexico to the United States are also active. They were temporarily implemented in April and will last through at least next July 22.
