Desert Rescues in Southern Arizona

TUCSON, ARIZONA, USA – Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents helped with multiple distress calls over the weekend of people lost in the desert.

The first incident occurred on Friday night when Wellton station agents received notification that an illegal alien in distress made an emergency phone call to Mexican authorities alledging that he was lost.

Mexican authorities relayed the information to the Border Patrol.

Agents from the Yuma Sector Border Search, Trauma, and Rescue Specialty Unit (BORSTAR) successfully contacted the person before relaying the information to agents in the field who located the man.

A Border Patrol (EMT) emergency medical technician evaluated the person and medically authorized him to travel. The matter was processed according to the guidelines of the Yuma sector.


On Saturday afternoon, a Yuma Sector agent detained an adult Mexican man who had illegally crossed into the United States through a remote section of the desert.

After the initial contact, the agent determined that the subject was dehydrated and needed medical attention.

A Border Patrol EMT was called to the scene and administered several bags of IV fluids.

The EMT was unable to bring the person’s blood pressure back to normal, which led to him being transported to the Yuma Regional Medical Center. After additional medical treatment, the subject was discharged from the hospital and processed according to the guidelines of the Yuma Sector.


On Sunday afternoon, the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) requested assistance in locating two distressed US citizens near Palo Verde, California.

Agents from the Yuma sector of Blythe Station located a 55-year-old male who required immediate medical attention and air evacuation.

Agents continued to trace the footprints of the other subject, a 45-year-old woman, who was found extremely dehydrated.

Both people were treated at a nearby hospital for overexposure and dehydration.


On Sunday night, the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Border Patrol in locating a 17-year-old runaway teenager.

ICSO reported that the minor left his friend’s vehicle in the direction of the Quechan Casino.

Border Patrol agents assigned near Andrade located the minor approximately half a mile east of Andrade Road on Interstate 8.

The minor was a United States citizen of El Centro, California. The minor was released to the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office.
