Customs is Neither Closed Nor Restricted

NOGALES, SONORA, MX – The checkpoints intended to reduce border crossing between Sonora and Arizona, were not installed following the protocol announced by the State Government.

The administrator of Mexican Customs in Nogales, Juan Gim, provided border crossing statistics for July 2. These are similar to those of a year ago.

“Customs is neither closed nor restricted,” he confirmed.

The administrator clarified that there are no conflicts between state and federal authorities. The checkpoints ordered by the State Government were installed outside of Customs in the cities of Nogales, Agua Prieta, San Luis Rio Colorado, and Naco.

“There is no instruction for the SAT, Mexico Customs, or the National Institute of Migration (INM) to install these checkpoints,” confirmed Gim. Despite the fact that a recent official statement from the State Government announced that they had reached agreements with the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) to implement these filters.

The administrator recalls that there is only one official agreement signed by the leaders of Mexico, United States, and Canada. Agreement 94 signed last March to reduce the spread of Covid-19 infections.

He also reiterates that a catalog of essential activities is published and that the agreement only limits northbound international travel.

“It is the only current and valid agreement, for execution at border crossings, there is no other; and the only authority is the National Institute of Migration, they are the only ones who can be inside the Customs facilities and who can carry out the interviews of people who want to enter the country,” he clarified.
