Covid-19 Outbreak in Migrant Shelter in Nogales

NOGALES, SONORA, MX – A Covid-19 outbreak in Nogales is affecting a family from the state of Guerrero, one adult from Cuba, and a second adult also from Guerrero. Both the family and the adults are temporarily staying in the San Juan Bosco Migrant Shelter in Nogales.

So far, three members of the family of eight have tested positive for coronavirus. The members that tested positive are a 54-year-old man, a 19-year-old, and a 17-year-old. To prevent the spread of the virus, the rest of the family is in isolation, two women and three children.

The other two infections are affecting one man also from the state of Guerrero and one man from the country of Cuba.

All are awaiting humanitarian asylum by the United States immigration authorities. This presumes that the virus was acquired locally.

Juan Francisco Loureiro Esquer, the legal advisor to the Albergue San Juan Bosco, revealed that they became aware of the cases until they detected that some people had symptoms.

He explained that as soon as they became aware, the Ministry of Health applied 20 rapid tests. Five tested positive.
