6,000 Tourists Spend Fourth of July Weekend in Rocky Point
PUERTO PEÑASCO, SONORA, MX – An estimated 6,000 tourists celebrated 4 of July weekend in Rocky Point, according to the Convention and Visitors Office (OCV).
The number of people that visited the seaport this year is low in comparison to past years. Historically during 4 of July weekend, Rocky Point receives about 35,000 visitors.
Including 4 of July weekend, Rocky Point has received tourism for three consecutive weekends amid and despite the pandemic. On the first weekend, there were about 3,000 visitors. The second weekend the visitors increased to about 4,000, while the third it’s estimated to be between 5,000 and 6,000 visitors.
Due to health regulations to prevent the spread of Covid-19, hotel occupancy is limited to 40% while resort occupancy is limited to 70%.
Tourism represents 85% of the economic activity of Puerto Peñasco. Another important economic sector is fishing though it temporarily banned for the protection of species such as Phocoena sinus (little cow) and Totoaba fish.
